Fin da bambina ho sempre sognato di fare un viaggio a New York, soprattutto dopo aver visto il film “Mamma ho riperso l’aereo mi sono smarrito a New York”. Da adolescente la sognavo ancora di più, immedesimandomi nella vita dei cocktail e delle esclusive feste di Carrie Bradshaw, protagonista di “Sex and the City”. Poi finalmente, dopo il mio primo viaggio a Manhattan con la consueta tappa d’obbligo alla “Colazione da Tiffany” mi sono totalmente innamorata di questa metropoli unica nel suo genere.
Ma non è finita qui… perché dopo averla girata con la guida alla mano, mi sono innamorata per la seconda volta, nel mio secondo viaggio, quello “insolito” in cui ho assaporato tutte le sfumature che New York offre.
La città degli appellativi, dello scintillio, dei grattacieli, della musica ma anche dei suoi contrasti, dei sapori etnici, delle storie degli emigranti e della povertà. New York offre tutto quello che si desidera e ti dà più di quello che si osa immaginare.
Partiamo da Meatpacking District. Gli stessi edifici a mattoni rossi dell’ex quartiere dell’industria della lavorazione della carne, ora ospitano boutique, caffetterie e loft di lusso. Di notte invece diventa centro del divertimento e passerella dei giovani estrosi in fila all’entrata delle discoteche. Avete presente il film “Le ragazze del Coyote Ugly”? Il particolare locale da cui prende ispirazione è proprio lo storico Hogs and Heifers bar, istituzione del quartiere.
Da fare assolutamente è la singolare passeggiata della High Line che vede il punto di partenza da Meatpacking District, precisamente dal Manhattan Refrigeration Building, palazzo del 1898 che veniva utilizzato per tenere in fresco prodotti alimentari.
La High Line è un parco sopraelevato che è stato costruito sopra i vecchi binari della ferrovia che trasportava merci alimentari nel West Side. Un bel risultato per un‘opera di riqualificazione che ha visto rinascere il quartiere industriale che era.
Un’attrazione da non perdere nelle vicinanze è senza dubbio il Chelsea Market. Un gruppo di 22 edifici che erano di proprietà della National Biscuit Company, l’azienda che ha inventato i famosi biscotti Oreo, ora trasformati in un grande mercato coperto dove trovare ogni genere stilistico e alimentare.
Per la sera, consiglio il Gramercy Park Hotel, location d’elite newyorkese, per un cocktail sul suo rooftop o all’adiacente Rose Bar, oppure una cena presso il suo esclusivo ristorante italiano Maialino.
Secondo quartiere da visitare è il romantico, pittoresco, raffinato e chic SoHo. Non solo potete trovarvi nelle stesse boutique delle celebrities ma anche capovolgere la giornata, ovvero cenare il pomeriggio e fare shopping la sera per poi buttarsi in locali e brasserie fino a tarda notte. L’architettura classica di gran fascino si intrapone tra quella dai mattoni rossi, e a cadenzare il ritmo tra edifici bianchi e rossi sono le scale antincendio sulla loro facciata. Proprio quelle che si vedono neri film! South of Houston, nome completo del quartiere, è anche soprannominato “Cast Iron District”, proprio perché alcuni edifici di fine ‘800 mantengono tutt’ora le decorazioni in ghisa che ricoprivano le facciate (all’epoca la materia costava ancor meno del mattone).
Abbandonata Manhattan, attraversiamo l’East River per immergerci nel quartiere degli hipster e dei creativi: Williamsburg. Anch’essa area industriale poco conosciuta fino a pochi anni fa, è stata completamente rivista con locali e negozi perfetti per un turismo meno caotico e commerciale rispetto a quello della Grande Mela. Ristorantini con tutti i sapori del mondo, open-air food market come il Smorgasburg, negozi vintage (il più famoso è Beacon’s Closet), botteghe d’artigianato, gallerie d’arte (da vedere Art 101) e librerie alternative (per sentire il profumo di cellulosa passate da Spoonbill & Sugartown), contornate da murales colorati e in riva al fiume per godere dei colori del tramonto dietro lo skyline della metropoli. E’ un quartiere in fermento, libertino e creativo che ha dato vita allo street style contemporaneo. Insomma, proprio il quartiere del tanto amato “Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man” (anche se, in realtà, il super eroe nasce nel Queens, quartiere limitrofo).
Secondo quartiere da visitare nelle vicinanze è DUMBO, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass (ai newyorkesi piacciano gli acronimi), considerato da molti ‘il prossimo SoHo’. E’ principalmente conosciuto come uno dei centri culturali e artistici grazie a eventi come l’annuale Art Under the Bridge Festival, il New York Photo Festival, associazioni come Arts at St. Ann’s. Ma la cosa più bella di questo quartiere è girarlo in bicicletta sulle tue stradini ciotolate e fare picnic in riva al fiume. Poi è d’obbligo una corsa sul Jane’s Carousel, un autentico carosello racchiuso in una teca di vetro.
Da bambina ho sognato New York e poi da adulta visitandola, sono tornata ad essere bambina.
Perché il meraviglioso potere di questa città è proprio quello di farti sognare!
